In one English village, there lived a blacksmith named Vakula, an immigrant from eastern Ukraine. In the same village lived a girl named Jenny. They loved each other and wanted to get married. But her jealous girlfriends tried to talk her out of it, “Take a good look at him – he’s all smutty, covered in grime, his hands are rough and coarse, all he can do is bend horseshoes and swing a hammer, he’s no good for you.” And Jenny said to Vakula once, "I'll marry you, but on one condition. Bring me a flower, the most beautiful one in the world, but do not crumple or break it with your rough hands". Vakula did not search for such a flower, because it was a waste of time, so instead he forged it out of iron. And when he gave it to Jenny, the flower came to life in her tender hands.
